What You Will Learn

Learn the basic concept in North Indian classical vocals (Hindustani) as well as vocal techniques from the ancient Dhrupad tradition. There are 18 live and interactive classes of an hour each. Each class will be recorded and available after for viewing.


PART ONE

  1. Sargam (Indian notes), the origin of Indian music, use of a tanpura
  2. Alankār- (patterns) with notes and ākār, and Sa Sādhana
  3. Swar Mapping
  4. Differences between western and Indian vocal techniques and style
  5. Vocal exercises based in speech therapy

About the course

Embark on a 16-week journey into the heart of North Indian classical music. This course blends ancient techniques and foundational structures of Hindustani vocals. Whether you are seeking technical mastery or a deeper spiritual connection through song, this interactive experience is designed for all levels.

  • Format: 16 Live, interactive 1-hour sessions via Zoom.

  • Support: All classes are recorded for later viewing, and I will provide personal feedback each class and on homework.

  • Level: No previous experience necessary.

Part 1: The Foundation of Sound

  • The Basics: Explore Sargam (Indian notes), the origins of Indian music, and the use of the Tanpura.

  • Vocal Geometry: Learn Alankār (patterns) and the sacred practice of Sa Sādhana.

  • Technique: Learn Swar Mapping and the key differences between Western and Indian vocal styles.

  • Devotional Practice: Learn three Bhajans with full notation.

Part 2: Rhythm and Resonance

  • Expansion: Practice Alankārs at multiple speeds and explore your vocal range through high and low notes (Mandra, Tār, and Kharaj).

  • Rhythm (Tāl): Understand rhythm through Bols for Bhajani & Keherwa.

  • Sacred Sound: Learn pronunciation & the Guru Sloka

Part 3: The World of Raga

  • Theory: Understand what defines a Raga—Thāt, Navarasa (9 emotions), timings, and history.

  • Structure: Dive into Aroha, Avroha, Vādi, Samvadi, Alāp, and Tāns.

  • Application: Learn a Bandish (composition) in Raga Bhupali and master Teental (16-count rhythm).

  • Healing: Explore the therapeutic power of Ragas for healing.
